David Hendy
Writer, broadcaster and cultural historian
David is a writer, broadcaster and Emeritus Professor of Media and Cultural History at the University of Sussex. David has worked as a trainee reporter at the BBC and as a producer on The World Tonight and Analysis. Since leaving the BBC, he’s taught at the University of Westminster and the University of Sussex.
David’s published five books, including Life on Air: A History of Radio Four which won the Longmans-History Today Book of the Year Award. In 2010, he co-wrote Between Two Worlds, a Drama on 3 for the BBC based on the life of the Victorian scientist and spiritualist Oliver Lodge. Since then, he’s appeared regularly on BBC Radio. For the past five years, he’s been the Principal Investigator on a project called ‘Connected Histories of the BBC’, a collaboration between the University of Sussex and the BBC aimed at widening access to the Corporation’s oral history collection. He retired from full-time academic life in December 2021.
