Dr Charlie Alcock
Founder, MAC-UK
Charlie Alcock qualified as a Clinical Psychologist at Canterbury Christchurch University and completed her thesis on Working Intergenerationally using the arts to facilitate social inclusion and sense of community belonging.
In 2008 she founded MAC-UK in partnership with a group of gang affected young people for whom all other services had been unreachable. Today MAC-UK has a delivery team of over 40 and is quickly growing in reputation as one of the most innovative agencies in the sector.
A key part of MAC-UK’s mission is to influence policy by raising awareness for youth violence as a public health issue. Charlie is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel to the Home Office Ending Gang and Serious Youth Violence Team and was a keynote speaker at the Home Office Conference on this issue.
Charlie speaks frequently at conferences, has appeared on television and radio including BBC and Sky News, Radio 4 All in the Mind, Moral Maze and Woman’s Hour and has been short-listed for numerous awards. Charlie acts as consultant to a number of agencies including Housing Co-Operatives and NHS, Local Authority and works closely with the Police and the Anna Freud Centre. MAC-UK was cited as an example of good practice in the Home Office Ending Gang and Youth Violence report (Nov 2011) and in the DH and North West Public Health Observatory report published in October 2012 on Protecting People, Promoting Health: A public health approach to violence prevention for England.
Charlie is an Honorary Lecturer at University College London, Sub Department of Clinical and Health Psychology and also teaches on clinical psychology doctoral programmes, co-delivered with young people, at a number of UK Universities including Oxford University, University Collage London, University East London and Canterbury Christchurch College.
