The power of cities in creating positive economic and social change is increasingly recognised. Across the world, city governments are facing the challenges posed by demographic shifts, climate change, pressures on public finances and economic uncertainty.
In the face of this global trend and of increasing international competition, the City Growth Commission investigated what is needed to enable our cities to thrive. Over the course of its 12 month inquiry the Commission achieved a high level of media and policy impact, influencing the political parties in the run up to the general election. There is a clear case for cities and their wider regions to take a new, enhanced role in our political economy.
