Schools without Walls is a research collaboration between the RSA and the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS).
We believe that schools that engage with ‘the world beyond the school gates’ can unlock huge potential benefits for both children and young people, and for the wider community with whom they engage.
We want to see communities benefitting from the positive social contribution of schools, and students benefitting from an educational experience that is enriched by types of learning that are rooted in their local community.
This might include, but is not limited to, the following forms of learning:
-
Place-based learning (building on prior RSA work on the area-based curriculum).
-
Community service and other structured volunteering.
-
Work-based learning that offers opportunities for contextual and applied learning in the workplace.
-
Cultural learning based on relationships with local artists and cultural institutions.
-
Parental engagement.
-
Environmental learning.
