Our relentless drive to create makes us unique among living creatures. How can we harness this instinct, and where is it taking us?
We face global, ‘wicked’ challenges that require all our ingenuity to address. Luckily, as a species we have a seemingly unlimited capacity to generate solutions to our problems. But we still know very little about this creative impulse.
Renowned neuroscientist David Eagleman and composer Anthony Brandt visit the RSA to unravel the threads of the arts, neuroscience, evolution and technology which make up the tapestry of human creativity, and explain how creativity can be a driving force to propel us into the future.
Through understanding our ability to innovate -our most profound, mysterious and deeply human capacity we can rise to meet the challenge of remaking our constantly shifting world.

I really enjoyed this talk, lots of things to think about. I totally agreed that the discussion was focussed more on ‘things’ than ways of living (which is what I’m interested in) but I guess that makes it an easier subject to talk about. I have a suspicion the speakers aren’t quite there, as regards the animal kingdom. David Eaglesham made the comment that the animal kingdom wasn’t doing the wonderful things humans are doing (I paraphrase). In there I feel there is a judgement that what we’re doing is amazing...and when we look at the totality of the world and it’s problems, that could be questioned!
Regarding animals not conceptualising, again I’m not so sure. When I’m working with my lab I can see him do a double-take when he’s working out how to collect multiple retrieves, so I feel something more is going on.
The talk made me reflect on lots of things that are helpful to me. I think my particular block on creativity is wasting time...a sort of worry that time is running out so I can’t do all this proliferation’s. Interesting, given time is meant to be an illusion.
Thanks for the talk 😊🐙
