What if everything we think we know about depression and anxiety is wrong?
One in four people in Britain is suffering from depression or anxiety in any given year – but have we been taught correctly about its causes? Bestselling author Johann Hari’s new book is radically changing what we have been told on the subject.
Hailed by Elton John, Emma Thompson, Russell Brand, Arianna Huffington, Alistair Campbell, Davina McCall and many more, Hari uses his social science training to investigate the causes of depression and anxiety – and discovers the cutting edge science that reveals the lack of evidence for the spontaneous chemical imbalance in our brains theory.
He discovered that, in reality, depression and anxiety are caused largely by crucial changes in the way we are living. Using vivid human stories and the best social science, he explains the evidence for seven crucial changes that are making us depressed and anxious, along with two biological causes that interact with them.

LONELINESS
Everybody is lonely.
Even in acrowd.
Perhaps less whenalone,
and able to makecontact with oneself.
If you don't want tobe alone,
then go spend timewith others.
Or invite people toyour home;
offer something orgive of yourself.
What do you have toshare?
What have you learntfrom life?
What have youaccumulated that you no longer need?
What can you giveaway?
How do you encounterthe world?
Are you here to takeor contribute?
Have you even beenable to receive yourself?
To connect with yourown needs?
Do you have a senseof having something to do?
Is there somethingmissing from your life?
Find the motivationto encounter that purpose in the world,
and you'll be one ofthose connected & satisfied,
With inner meaningand a direction to go in.
For it is when youconnect with yourself,
that you're nolonger lonely.

Such a brilliant talk, I could have sat there for another 2 hours and listened to Johann's stories about human resilience in the face of anxiety and depression and the reality of psychological pain. A great learning that my organisation had it spot on - we promote joining the volunteer team of More To Life (after taking the personal development training) and being in service to others as a method of growing and learning. Being a contribution, having purpose, belonging and genuine relationships creates a meaningful life...perfect message!
