RSA Liverpool: The Need to Radically Change Disability Assessments

Join us for a discussion about how, in order to address the societal barriers that perpetuate the marginalisation of disabled people, the notion of traditional, charitable action needs to be rejected in favour of a rights-based approach.

Led by Miro Griffiths MBE FRSA, the talk will examine how current disability assessment procedures are rooted in a medical discourse, which results in disabled people not accessing the right level of support; furthermore, by focusing on an individual's health and/or impairment, there is a reluctance to address the societal barriers that perpetuates disabled people's marginalisation.

The talk will conclude with a suggestion that assessment procedures must be rooted in a "social model of disability" and should be designed, developed, and delivered by disabled people.

Following the talk, there will be a discussion on the issues raised.

Miro Griffiths MBE FRSA is a researcher and teacher at Liverpool John Moores University, where his research explores how marginalised groups experience social movements and activism. Miro is also an adviser to the UK Government and European Commission on human and civil rights, and he works with a number of local, regional and national organisations to address social justice issues.
