It is no secret that the pandemic has highlighted the pressures and inequalities within our education systems.
Paradoxically, it has both drastically exacerbated these issues, while also generating space for innovation. What will be the long term effects, and what can we learn from alternative approaches taken worldwide?
From developing effective distance learning programmes to coping with assessment, we have seen schools worldwide adapt and innovate to meet unprecedented challenges, and ensure no student is left behind. Yet despite this, evidence suggests the inevitable learning loss will further widen the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and their peers by a possible 36%.
In a post-Covid future, education will likely involve extensive collaboration with surrounding institutions, both in terms of finding additional space and supporting a range of complex needs highlighted by the virus. Maybe it will require adopting a more holistic approach between educators, families and youth services. What might all this look like?
How can we effectively build an infrastructure of learning and access to opportunity within communities - particularly where there is increasing economic and social disadvantage?
What else have we not yet considered? What learnings can we take from the approach of education systems worldwide?
On Tuesday 3 Nov, we will be exploring these questions with Tim Howarth, RSA Catalyst Grant winner and CEO at United World Schools and Diane Reay, Professor of Education and Executive editor of British Journal of Sociology of Education.
Leading the conversation is our RSA Fellow-led Inequality in Education Network lead, Lynda Haddock FRSA.
Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity for attendees to hear each others insights and experiences in breakout rooms, network across the world and share with the wider group in plenary.
You do not need to be an educator, an expert in this field or an RSA Fellow to take part – we are keen to hear from a diverse range of perspectives and experiences. All are welcome.
