Join us on 5 August to hear from RSA Fellow Shirley Anstis, sharing some of her research on minority backgrounds and Black British MPs routes to power, delving into the real stories and experiences of these innovative groundbreakers.

Education provides an opportunity to raise aspirations and achievements of all young people, regardless of class or ethnicity. Inclusive learning ensures everyone is encouraged to be the best they can be. Yet we must appreciate that most people are motivated by those they can connect to. The books and speakers we provide for young people need to speak to their diversity. When role models come from varying strands of society, young people can find successful examples of people who look or sound like them, which can be hugely impactful at this crucial adolescent age.

So what can we learn about success against the odds from Black Members of Parliament? What does it take to be the first person from your background to achieve something? And how could highlighting their stories inspire more young people to do the same?

At this event, RSA Fellow Shirley Anstis MBACP will share some of her research on the real stories and experiences of these groundbreaking changemakers, and explore these questions. There will be an opportunity for attendees to share insights, and gather to think about possible next steps.
