This event will mix a walking tour of Weymouth with a chance to connect and learn about other Fellows in the local area
John Megoran FRSA, author of Weymouth and Portland in 50 Buildings, will lead us on a walking tour of Weymouth’s harbour, back streets and promenade. We will explore how buildings, architecture and landscape reflect the diverse people who have visited, lived in and shaped the town.
After a troubled history in the Civil War, Weymouth took off as a playground for aristocrats in the mid eighteenth century. It became the seaside residence of King George III and spawned a building bonanza of some of the finest Georgian and Regency architecture in the country. The arrival of the railway in 1857 transformed the visitor profile from the moneyed elite to the mass market. Weymouth was soon bursting with visitors from Britain’s industrial heartland, packing the beach each summer and the Navy cramming the pubs all the year round when the fleet was in at Portland. The town played a pivotal role in both World Wars. It has been a major departure point for cross Channel ferries. And it is a major sailing venue today, having been selected as host for the 2012 Olympic Games.
We will start the event by meeting at Nautico Lounge for coffee/tea and time for conversation, and from there we will set out on a short, guided walk to finish by 1pm. Following the walk, there will be an opportunity to have lunch together (at own expense) for those who would like to.
Location: Nautico Lounge, 66 St Thomas St Weymouth, DT4 8EL
We hope you will join us!
Taking part in RSA in-person events
We've been looking forward to finally being able to meet together in person. But of course recognise it is important for us to stay cautious and make the environment safe for everyone.
We aim to have assurances from all venues that they will have basic COVID-safety processes in place.
We’re asking all attendees of events to be respectful of personal space, to be mindful of others preferences in regards to social distancing and to respect those that are wearing face coverings.
To participate in the event, you will need to register for a ticket so we can make sure we have an up-to-date list of those who plan on attending. This is for capacity purposes.
We request that all attendees evaluate their own health and that of those they’re in close contact with. We encourage all attendees that are sick or showing symptoms of illness to stay home and to cancel your Eventbrite ticket if you are no longer able to join the event.
Given the ever-changing nature of the pandemic, please always check your latest national Government guidance in addition to following our baseline guidance enclosed here. If guidelines do change, the event may be cancelled at short notice.
