Inspired by the RSA’s origin in an enlightenment coffeehouse over 260 years ago, our new Northern Coffeehouse series offers an interactive space to share ideas for social change.

We're joined by Paul Salveson FRSA, an historian of the railways of northern England.

Railway history is often reduced to nothing more than an account of locomotives, carriages and other hardware. Yet railways were – and are – about people. The railways were major employers. The railways carried thousands of working class holidaymakers to Blackpool and Southport, creating the modern seaside resort. The luxurious ‘club trains’ of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway carried textile magnates from their homes in Blackpool and Lytham to the Cotton Exchange in Manchester each day.

Paul’s talk will look at life on the railways over the last two centuries - from atmospheric ghost stories to dealing with more difficult issues such as racism and sexism - and give a flavour of the stories in his latest book, Last Train from Blackstock Junction.

Join us most Fridays for an informal lunchtime talk followed by a chance to discuss the topic of the day or anything else that is on your mind, in small breakout rooms. Starting at 1pm and finished by 1.45pm, you can enjoy your Friday lunch break with inspiring speakers and interesting colleagues.
