The United Nations has set a Sustainable Development Goal of making cities more “inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” (Goal number 11). However, as our cities continue to grow, how do we ensure they are developed in a more sustainable and accessible way, which is more equitable for everyone?

This in-person showcase event in Southampton will provide case studies of how our cities need to improve; and some examples of the ongoing work to help our communities develop more vibrant, people-oriented cities that promote healthy and sustainable living, including the ‘Is this street made for me?’ project developed by the local community enterprise, We make Southampton.

If you would also like to highlight a project or shout-out further ideas in this area, please contact the event producer, [email protected], stating ‘RSA event 8 June 2023’ in the subject line, before 31 May 2023.

This event is free to attend, and open to Fellows, friends, and colleagues who are interested in supporting the work of the RSA, as well as members of the Future Cities Community Hub and anyone who lives in Southampton and the wider Solent region.

The Future Cities Community Hub was established in 2018 by the University of Southampton’s Public Engagement with Research unit (PERu) to bring together our local community to help make Southampton a more vibrant and people-oriented City. Underpinned by extensive research, the aim of the Hub is to help improve our local connections between people and neighbourhoods, through more effective use of space, improved mobility, and art and culture for healthy and sustainable living. While the focus has been on Southampton and the surrounding areas, the experience and lessons gained should be relevant to all UK cities or urban conurbations.

An informal drinks reception will follow the showcase (or more formal) part of the evening, to enable people to network, socialise, and discuss further opportunities for collaboration. While this event is aimed at Fellows of the RSA and members of the local Future Cities Community Hub, all are welcomed!
