RSA Fellows from India, Ms. Kirthi Jayakumar and Dr. Rositta Joseph Valiyamattam, are collaborating on The Gender Security Project.

This initiative, founded by Kirthi Jayakumar, works at the cross-sections of gender, peace, security, feminist foreign policy, and transitional justice through research, reportage, and documentation. Rositta Joseph has been contributing a column to the project under the title Gender and Countering Violent Extremism.

The column is dedicated to publishing a series of articles based on field research carried out by Rositta and her team in Western India, in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and the School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh, during 2019-2020.

The research highlights the crucial and largely undocumented role being played by ordinary women from the slums and chawls of Mumbai and other cities in Western India, in facing and countering religion-based violence and in fostering inter-generational communal harmony and peace.

This initiative, which brings together academics, activists, social workers and ordinary citizens from India and the UK, seeks to identify and emulate feminine peace-building strategies in times of increasing religious polarisation and fundamentalist violence.
