The title ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ (RDI) is awarded annually by the RSA to designers of all disciplines who have achieved ‘sustained design excellence, work of aesthetic value and significant benefit to society. It is currently the highest accolade for designers in the UK.
This November, multi award-winning set and costume designer John Napier RDI, is to present his first major exhibition - Stages - at the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne. Napier’s innovation and distinctive designs are responsible for some of the most iconic theatre productions: the horses in Equus; the barricades in Les Misérables; the helicopter in Miss Saigon; the outsize junkyard in Cats; and of course Starlight Express. Stages encompasses these theatre achievements alongside Napier’s artworks. The collection includes costume designs, 3- dimensional pieces based on his theatre work, and sculptures which have been created in parallel with his career - find out more.
Michael Foreman RDI, a prolific illustrator who has been illustrating books for more than 50 years, is the subject of a retrospective exhibition that has just opened at The National Centre for Children’s books in Newcastle.For further details, visit the Seven Stories website.
