Year 7 & 8

School: St Mary’s Melrose
Design: An app enables young people to meet and make friends, especially if they identify as LGBTQIA+, providing information and support.

The judges were blown away by the pupils’ passion and the way they had approached the topic with such maturity. Pupils had conducted rigorous research to try and understand the issues that young people who identify as LGBTQIA+ face. They then took these insights and applied design thinking principles to help them understand how social design can be used to support community building.

Year 9 & 10

Team: Leila
School: South Hampstead High School
Design: Green Homes

An adaptable fence post and frame that enhances local biodiversity by encouraging natural growth and providing habitat for insects, making the most of unused and abandoned areas.

Leila’s proposal ticked all the boxes for the judges due to her unique interpretation of the brief, drawing inspiration from her community, and the consideration she had given to wider sustainable impact. Judges were particularly impressed with Leila’s presentation on her simple but effective proposal.

Year 12

Team: Lily
School: Alexandra Park School
Design: Educating children on the importance of food sustainability through a recyclable pop-up book made from seeded paper which can be torn out and planted for children to start growing their own food.

The judges felt that Lily’s idea took the challenging brief of food waste and developed a proposal that was unexpected, innovative and consider wider issues connected to food waste. All the judges agreed they could see the pop-up book working in the real world with potentially lots of interest from charities and businesses looking to engage with children and families on this important issue.
