Is Kindness really an appropriate test? Doing what is right may involve doing things that seem deeply unkind to people of different views. To what extent is my determination to be the arbiter of what kindness is, the answer. I have great respect for people who take unpopular decisions that are shown to be right. A contemporary example might be taking PPE off healthcare workers to give to bus drivers. I can hear the shrillness of the outcry, but if you look at the (admittedly early and inadequate) evidence, it's brave, apparently unkind, but probably right.
It seems to me that the subordination of ego is a better test. Can I put myself last, can I serve? It's an unfashionable notion in a world of personal brands, but I suggest it has a timelessness.
It's children's mental health week.
I am head of a secondary school near Reading and we are focusing on acts of kindness. This short is great for assembly!
