The first annual Sustainable Fashion London symposium recently took place during London Fashion Week SS18 in September. The event connected industry, organisations, and leading researchers in fashion sustainability from across the UK with innovative talks and presentations addressing the key themes of sustainable design, ethical production, retail and consumption, and education.
The aim was to provide a platform for sustainable fashion during fashion week and create a discussion about how the fashion industry can implement sustainable solutions to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Production and Consumption.
The event was funded by the non-profit organisation Certified Made in the UK and hosted in association with the RSA. Fellows speaking at the symposium included event co-founder Debbie Moorhouse, Certified Made in the UK; Susan Harris, Anthesis Group; Catherine Weetman, Re-think Solutions; Dr Paul Pritchard, Iken Associates; and Talia Hussain, Ramnation. As a result of the event, we welcome two of the speakers as new Fellows: Dr Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas, London College of Fashion; and Zoe Olivia John, University of Loughborough. Congratulations Natascha and Zoe!
Hilda Varley, founder of Strap Trap and sustainable store Sheer Apparel, kindly donated product samples and gift vouchers for the attendees.
In October, RSA Global hosted an online event asking how the clothing industry can embrace sustainability. The plenary discussion provided an insight to different perspectives of sustainable fashion around the world. Key note speakers were Susan Harris, RSA sustainability network lead and technical director at Anthesis Group; Debbie Moorhouse, RSA sustainable fashion group lead, fashion designer, and co-founder of Certified Made in the UK; and Honor Cowen, senior consultant at Anthesis Group.
The latest project the sustainable fashion group will now focus on is to publish an international journal for sustainable fashion. The journal will include industry insights and also act as a repository for the advancement of published research within fashion sustainability, creating a resource of updated information on the subject.
If you are a Fellow interested in contributing to the journal or being part of the sustainable fashion group, please contact Debbie Moorhouse: [email protected].
