285 million people worldwide live with visual impairment, 39 million of whom are blind. 80% of all eye disease is preventable or reversible, however 90% of those living with poor sight are in developing countries with minimal or no access to eye care.

In the face of these challenges, award-winning social enterprise Peek designed a digital eye examination kit which allows easy access to diagnosis and care. Developed in close cooperation with local communities and healthcare workers, the system is low cost, portable and operable independent of language.

Clinical lecturer and co-founder of Peek, Andrew Bastawrous will share his journey of working in Kenya as an eye surgeon and the development and testing of the smartphone-based system for reaching people in remote areas.

Andrew is also involved a collaboration with astrophysicists to crowdsource data from images of the eye, aiding further research which is changing lives worldwide.
